CHITWAN, Jan14: During winter, different species of birds migrate to Nepal. Among them most of the species are winter water birds visiting streams, rivers, lakes and wetland of different places of the country.  The fresh water and availability of prey attract the birds even from the Siberian region. They fly across the Himalayan ranges and enter Nepal each year. Their presence indicates that the waters are still pristine in our country.

Bird census was done from Kumaroj to the dam of Rapti River recently in Chitwan. Birds were found basking the sun on the bank of river. Along with birds, the wild animals such as deer, crocodile, and gharial were encountered during the process. According to the latest census there are 198 gharials are in Nepal among which Narayani and Rapti Rivers are habitat for 166 gharials.

From 1987, the census has been carried out in South Asia to know the actual condition of the water birds. Every year from January 6 to January 29 censuses is carried out.
