KATHMANDU, Jan 20: A total of 32 metric tons of solid waste was extracted in the weekly cleaning of various rivers and the ring road of the valley today. 

Five metric tons of waste was managed from the Manohara confluence area that marked the 245th weekly cleaning of the Bagmati river. Around 450 campaigners including the founder of the Bagmati Cleanliness Mega Campaign and Nepali Ambassador to China Lila Mani Poudel and Chair of the High-powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee took part in the cleaning of the sacred Bagmati river, according to campaigner Mala Kharel. 

Likewise, the Bagmati cleaning above Guheswari reached 206th week today, with one metric ton of solid waste scooped out from the Gothatar bridge area. Pudasaini Maitri Samaj, Ramro Jorpati Hamro Jorpati and other initiatives took part in the cleaning, according to campaigner Uttam Pudasaini. 

Meanwhile, the 151st week of cleaning of the Bagmati river in the Tilganga area saw a door-to-door campaigning sensitizing people about the need to keep home-produced solid waste away from rivers. Accordingly, anyone found doing so will be penalized, campaigner Asha Pandey said. 

The Rudramati cleaning reached its 200th week today. And it was observed with the organising of a cleanliness awareness rally that began from Ratopul and passed through Gyaneswar, Kamal Pokhari, Dillibazar and ended at Maitidevi temple premises. The participants of the rally also collected solid waste in the process and managed one metric ton, according to Vice-president of Rudramati Sarokar Samaj Rohit Giri. More than 250 people took part in the initiative led by campaigner Bigyan Raj Sharma. 

Similarly, 15 metric tons of solid waste was managed under the 41st week of Ring Road cleaning campaign that took place today from Chabahil to Sukedhara. Former CoAS Rukmangat Katwal joined some 350 campaigners in the cleaning initiative, according to campaigner Lok Bahadur Tandon. 

Furthermore, with the help of Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation, old vehicles left unattended one the two sides of the ring road were removed. 

Today also marked the 41st week of cleaning of Aloknagar and a door-to-door cleaning took place in the Min Bhawan area, according to campaigner Pramila Poudel. 

Another ten metric tons of solid wasted was managed from Syuchatar to Sitapaila chowk under the 23rd week of cleaning of the Bafal section of the ring road. 

The cleaning campaign that began with the Bagmati cleaning mega campaign on May 19, 2013 has taken a nationwide form with cleaning of rivers, towns and market places now taking place in more than 45 locations across the country.
