What’s your destination?

People need jobs not only to sustain economically but also to broaden their intellectual horizon and gain practical experience. We invest our time and money to become qualified for prestigious as well as high-paying jobs. Especially students studying in bachelor’s level are likely to plan to get a job immediately after their studies.

Many Nepali youths move abroad in search of a better life that comprises regular pay, job security and ample holidays. In Nepal though, the lack of employment opportunities has always pushed the nation’s economy backwards. Most career-centric youngsters begin preparing for their future jobs since an early age. Some join classes to study for government jobs, a few take the help of favoritism, and others struggle among interviews and tests to secure a stable private job.

To understand what today’s youth want, My City team talked with the assistant manager as well as bachelor’s students at Uniglobe College, New Baneshwar and asked them what they preferred — private or government jobs.

Madhav Subedi (40)

Assistant manager at Uniglobe College

Being the employee of a private college, I’d unquestionably favor private jobs because they are systematic professional. A private job teaches you to be creative, hard-working and patient. Moreover, it also teaches you to be smart, alert, and competitive. Meanwhile, we can see that most of government employees are corrupted and lazy bones. So for me, private job is the first choice. Nevertheless, government jobs are also good if you work with dedication and without any excuses.

Roshni Baral (22) BBA, 5th Semester

I’d like to have a private job after my completing my studies because I want to see myself as an independent entrepreneur in future. I think if I get a government job, I won’t be able to explore myself because of the limited resources and ideas that are found at government offices. In private jobs, there is the freedom to generate our own ideas whereas we have to work under the government’s ideas if you are in civil services.

Aagya Dhital (19) BBA, 3rd Semester

Since government jobs offer a stable future with pension, provident fund and permanent employee status as well as less stress, I would definitely like to be a part of the civil services. Not only that, a government job is considered prestigious in the Nepali society and everyone will respect you once you become a civil officer. I think private jobs have no future guarantee and they abuse your skills for a minimal pay.

Pronita KC (19) BBA 3rd Semester

We are brought up in a society that teaches us that government job is prestigious as it promises a secured future. Besides, civil services also give you an opportunity to build the nation and work for your people. I’d like to go for a government job because I think that way I will play a part in national building and development. And the best thing of being a government employee is that there is less stress and you get more holidays as compared to private jobs.

Raman Silwal (20) BBA, 3rd Semester

I’d like to have a private job after my studies because the field gives us the freedom to be innovative and to mingle with various advancements. The best part of having a private job is that you don’t necessarily need to stick to a 10 to 5 schedule. You can also be simultaneously involved in other things. Private sector takes development and technological updates hand-in-hand, while the government offices still run on out-dated work ethics and technology.

Drispa Kunwar (19) BBA, 3rd Semester

As private jobs come with all facilities that government jobs have, I’d undoubtedly choose a private job since it has limitless scopes. If we are capable and qualified, we get promoted immediately in private sector whereas in government sector, nepotism and political agenda are the major influencers than a person’s talent and capability. In case of private sector, you can be our own boss if you have the leadership ability.

Shrutee Acharya (19) BBA, 3rd Semester

For me government jobs are the best because they give you good reputation as well as a secured future. Private jobs come with a lot of stress as well as responsibilities, while you don’t a minute to spare for yourself.  Though it is true that government employees are corrupted and sloppy, but the younger generation has to change that. If more young people joined the civil services, I think government offices would thrive more than the private sector.

David Ghimire (21) BBA, 5th Semester

I will certainly be a part of the private sector in future because the field has less boundaries and hierarchy, and we can even create own policies. We can master ourselves by realizing our potential and immediately implying our idea without any hindrance and obstacles in the private sector. But in government offices, one has to go through numerous seniors’ approvals and paper works to get the tiniest things done.

Samvid Kishore Kshatri (20)  BBA 3rd Semester

Well, we get more exposure and opportunities in private sector. Students like us have a hard time adapting in government sector because of its old and typical system. Indeed, I prefer a private job over government. Moreover, the private sector also offers medical allowance and holidays just like government jobs.
