LAHAN, Feb 5: Madhesi people's continuous struggle for federalism has finally borne fruit after the country adopted the federal setup, said  people in the plains.

During  the first meeting of provincial assembly of  Province-2 on Sunday, members of the assembly representing the Madhesi parties welcomed the new setup. “Madhesi people's long struggle for federalism has now brought us immense happiness. This moment is indeed precious,” said Provincial Assemblyman Jitendra Sonal, who was elected on a Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) ticket.

Another member, Suresh Kumar Mandal, said,” Our dream of federalism going back to the Madhesi movement of 2007 has now been fulfilled. But we are yet to  secure some other rights. We will continue our struggle.”

The provincial governor has already been appointed. The meeting of the provincial assembly  has also begun, while the political parties have intensified the task of   forming the provincial government. The interim constitution had  approved the federal structure for the country a decade ago and its implementation has now begun.

“Implementation of the federal structure has brought the powers of Singha Durbar down to the local level. This is indeed something to celebrate,” said Ram Saroj Yadav at the provincial assembly meeting. “All of us should unite for development in the province through the effective implemention of federalism.”

The new constitution promulgated on September 20, 2015 divided the country into seven provinces. The provincial elections, which were conducted in two phases a few months ago, elected a total of 550 provincial assembly members . All the provinces recently had their first provincial assembly meetings.

“The transitional journey to federalism should move forward with  economic reforms along with the addressing of political problems,” said Dr Mahadev Sah, founder of Lahan Safotech College.
