Movie screening to encourage Investigative Journalism

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: The US Embassy Kathmandu in association with Film Critics Society of Nepal (FCSN) screened ‘Spotlight’, a movie based on a true story which follows the oldest continuously operating investigative journalist unit in the United States.

According to the press statement released by the US Embassy, this special show with a discussion on the movie and role of media and importance of press freedom was organized to promote and encourage investigative journalism in Nepal.

It added that Spokesperson of the Embassy Andrea De Arment joined the panel with President of FCSN Yangesh and Prominent Journalist and Nepali Times Editor Kunda Dixit and shared on the Embassy’s media initiatives and an investigative journalism project the Embassy is conducting this year.

Dixit highlighted the situation of investigative reporting in Nepal and urged journalists and students to work passionately to create impacting stories. It further added that as a part of American Classic Movie Series this show was a full house attended by more than 300 audiences; journalists, activists, journalism students, film makers and representatives of FCSN.

Embassy is working with Sharecast Initiative Nepal to implement the investigative journalism project that will help Nepali journalists produce quality investigative reports through fellowship, training and mentorship programs. This fellowship will help reporters from major media outlets; online, Radio and TV broadcast, and print to help them produce stories on key issues that limit Nepal’s democratic and economic, as per the press statement.
