KATHMANDU, Feb 23: Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa signed a grant contract in Kathmandu on Thursday to help reconstruct the Sarswati Peace School in Arughat Rural Municipality, Gorkha. The agreement will help the reconstruction of classrooms of the school under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan. The US$ 90,027 grant will support the reconstruction of a two-story building with eight classrooms. The building to be constructed by the fund is one of the four structures of the school that was severely damaged by the 2015 earthquake.

Established in 2011, Sarswati Peace School is a community school that has been providing education to 117 students from kindergarten to grade six. Sarswati Foundation built the school and it has been supporting the institution to develop further. The new construction will add more space for the students to engage in academic and other activities. Ishwar Adhikari, chairman of the school, said this cooperation will be one step closer to providing quality education to children in remote villages.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, ambassador Ogawa expressed optimism that the new government will expedite the reconstruction of houses damaged by the earthquake. He stated that this support is a goodwill gesture from the people of Japan to Nepal.  The Embassy of Japan says the project will contribute toward "Build Back Better" and will provide better educational opportunities to students for a brighter future.
