PANCHTHAR, March 9: With the water current eroding one of the pillars of the concrete bridge over the Tamor River at Majhitar connecting Paanchthar and Tehrathum districts, exposing the steel rods used to build the pillar, the bridge has become risky. However, the authorities concerned have paid no attention to repair the bridge which was constructed four years ago.

“The bridge looks too fragile. It should not be used anymore without repairing. It may invite an untoward incident if due attention is not paid,” said an engineer, requesting anonymity. “But the authorities have no time for this. Hundreds of heavy and light vehicles pass through the bridge every day,” he added.

Shiva Khatri, an engineer with the Mid-hills Highway, however, stated that the situation is not that bad. A formal inspection will be made, he said.

“We do not think the bridge has become that risky. We are not aware of that. However, we will inspect the bridge and do the needful,” he said.

The 200-meter long bridge was constructed by Lama and Sapana Construction Company at a cost of Rs 151.7 million. The construction of the bridge had come as a huge relief for the locals of both Terathum and Pachthar.
