Four Kailali mayor attack suspects arrested

Bullet removed from mayor's body, Chand-led CPN denies hand in the attack

DHANGADHI, March 13: Four cadres of the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) have been arrested in the suspicion of being involved in shooting at Mamata Prasad Chaudhary, mayor of Ghodaghodi Municipality in Kailali district.

Three cadres were arrested on Monday night while one was arrested on Tuesday, according to Chief District Officer Govinda Rijal of Kailali. They are currently being held in judicial custody for investigation.

Police have arrested Kamal Chhetri aka Pabitra, Bharat Shah and Hridaya Bogti, all of whom are the members of the CPN's district secretariat, Kailali. The trio was arrested on Monday night while they were sleeping. The other one who was arrested a day later has not been identified due to ongoing investigation of police. 

Chand-led CPN has not officially taken the responsibility of the attack. Following the arrest, the party issued a statement demanding an impartial investigation into the incident, unconditional release of their cadres and arrest of those who actually are involved in the shooting. 

Although the Chand-led CPN is yet to own up the incident, police have strongly suspected their involvement. 

Ghodaghodi Municipality's mayor was shot at at a time when he was accused of preventing the registration of complaints at the local police office in an incident of brutal manhandling of one Radha Chaudhary on the charge of practicing witchcraft. The incident had taken place in Deukaliya village of the municipality last Thursday.

Mayor Chaudhary was taken to Nepalgunj for preliminary treatment on Monday night. Nepal Army then airlifted him to Kathmandu from Nepalgunj on Tuesday. He is currently undergoing treatment at Kathmandu-based Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital. The bullet which hit him in the abdomen has been taken out and he is said to be out of danger.

Following the attack, the youth wing of the ruling CPN-UML, the party Mayor Chaudhary is affiliated to, enforced a bandh in Ghodaghodi since early Tuesday morning, demanding action against the guilty. Various parties in the district have condemned the attack.
