ITAHARI, Mar 20: The fire-ravaged Ikrahi settlement in Sunsari district is currently faces the risk of spread of disease as the carcasses of cattle that perished in the disaster have yet to be properly disposed of.

Moreover, there is shortage of drinking water after fire destroyed the entire settlement. The place also lacks toilets and the residents have no option but to defecate in the open.

A massive fire on Saturday night gutted the houses of all the 49 families. The hand pumps installed at each house for drawing ground water for drinking and household purposes have also become dysfunctional.

The settlement has started reeking as the animal carcasses have not been properly managed and there is fear of spread of cholera in the area, said Harilal Sardar, a fire victim.

Meanwhile, the Sunsari district chapter of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress, on Monday distributed foodstuff, clothes and tarpauline sheets to the fire-affected families at Ikrahi. RSS
