KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Chinese Primier Li Keqiang has emphasized the need for political stability in Nepal for its sustainable economic and social development. During his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara in Beijing Wednesday, Li underlined that agreements and treaties between Nepal and China could not fully function without political stability in Nepal.

Mahara had called on the Chinese premier at the Office of the Premier at Zhongnanhai, Beijing as a special envoy of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

"We are committed to executing all the agreements and treaties inked during the visits of Nepali prime ministers at various times. Political stability is essential for the smooth execution of all the agreements," Acting Nepali Ambassador to Beijing Harishchandra Ghimire, who was present at the meeting, quoted the Chinese premier has saying.

Li also suggested that execution without delay of agreements and treaties between the two countries  would be significant for Nepal's economic development and stressed that an action plan should be formulated for prompt implementation.

He likewise suggested political cooperation and consensus for implementing the new Constitution of Nepal and expressed satisfaction at the progress achieved in constitution implementation so far.

According to the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, the Chinese premier, during the courtesy meeting, thanked DPM Mahara for the invitations extended to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the premier himself. "Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries would stay in touch for necessary coordination," the embassy quoted Li as saying in response to the invitations.

Earlier on Tuesday, DPM Mahara met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and handed over the invitation letter from President Bidya Devi Bhandari to Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Nepal.

On the occasion, Wang also suggested prompt execution of agreements and treaties between the two countries. During his week-long China visit back in March, then prime minister KP Sharma Oli inked 10 agreements and treaties with China, including a trade and transit treaty.

The government last Thursday decided to send DPMs Bimalendra Nidhi and Mahara to India and China respectively as special envoys of the prime minister to strengthen relations with the two neighboring countries.
