Souls of My City: Tides of life

Tides of life
Carpet maker Indira Gole, 35, came to Kathmandu from Hetauda with her brothers to try her luck in the city, when she was just 14. She had no option but to start working as she was the breadwinner for herself and her brothers. Obviously, the situation in Kathmandu was not as favorable as she had thought. She had to wake up at 4am and then her daily chores began. She weaved carpet till 11pm. However, she coped with the situation and managed to find happiness in her work. The cost of living was relatively lower then. “It was hard but since things were cheaper then, I survived and was happy. Now, the earning is high and so is the cost of living. It is very difficult to sustain yourself in Kathmandu these days,” Gole said. Currently, she lives at Boudha with her husband, two sons and a daughter. “My husband is a carpenter and together, we fulfill the needs of our family “, she added.
