KOHALPUR, May 14: A few months ago, a 19-year-old girl of Raptisonari Rural Municipality of Banke district received a friend request on Facebook from a person named Sunil. She accepted the request and started chatting with him. They even exchanged their phone numbers. One day, they made a plan to meet in Kohalpur, where Sunil proposed to her. Though the girl informed him that she was already married and also had a four-year-old son, Sunil insisted on marrying her.

Sunil convinced her that he had no problem with her marital status. Although the girl was married at the age of 14, she had remained a single mother after her husband left her when she was about to deliver their son.

“He often used get drunk and beat me. I was tired of this,” she said. Now, she has been living in her maternal home. With the expectation that Sunil would provide fatherly love to her son and become her life partner, she accepted his proposal.

After knowing him for four months, she became ready to elope with him. Taking advantage of that, Sunil took her across the border  to Rupaidiya, India. She ran away with him by leaving her little son at her maternal home.

After reaching India, Sunil took her to the room of a person named Ramesh Thakur in Delhi. Later, he left the room by making an excuse. When the stranger informed her that she had been sold, she felt like falling off a cliff.

She had never imagined in her wildest dreams that the person she had trusted so much would sell her to a brothel.

Crying was the only option left for her. For one month, she was sent to private customers only. Thakur used medicines to make her unconscious. “After finding out that I was given medicines to make me unconscious, I started throwing them but convinced him that I had taken them,” she said.
After a few months, she was taken to brothel No 64 at GB road of Delhi which is considered as a red-light area. She had to face more torture there. She had to serve to around 15 to 30 customers per day. In the beginning, she used to yell and cry for help but later she got used to it as there was no one to help her. Instead, she started being nice to her customers. After being friendly with one of the customers, she was able to ask for his phone. As she still remembered her father’s phone number, she immediately dialed him. Tears started rolling down from her father’s cheeks after she narrated him about her situation.

Her father filed an application with an organization which worked against human trafficking. Following that, KI Nepal informed the Nepali Embassy based in New Delhi and rescued the girl with the help of Indian police. She arrived at her home on Saturday.

“I had never thought that I would be able to get out of that brothel. It almost feels like a rebirth to me,” she said.

According to Apana Bhatta, in-charge of KI Nepal, Banke, advancement and misuse of technology have increased cases of human trafficking. She informed that human traffickers have been creating networks in social media from where they try to trap innocent girls from poor families.
