Astonished surgeons in India have successfully removed 40 metal knives from a man who had swallowed them because he liked the taste of cutlery. 

Jarnail Singh, 42, was admitted to hospital in Gurdaspur, India, a few days ago complaining about abdominal pains.

A team of five surgeons were surprised to discover Singh had swallowed 40 knives over two months, The Daily Mail reported. 



"When we began diagnosis, we found the cause of the pain puzzling. We did an ultrasound, which revealed some solid mass in his stomach, shaped like cancer," said Dr Jitinder Malhortra. 

"The patient then told us he had an uncontrollable urge to eat knives. What is astonishing is that he had been eating knives since the past two months".

"This was very unnerving, I have not witnessed something like this in my career as a doctor," said Malhorta. 

It took five hours for the team of surgeons to carefully extract the knives from Singh. 
The operation was a success and Singh will be released from hospital in a few days.
