KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Basundhara-based Ishan children and Women's Hospital was vandalized by the relatives of a three-year-old child who died in the course treatment at the hospital on Tuesday.

The enraged relatives accused the hospital staff of negligence and had refused to receive the body of the child until Tuesday evening, demanding probe and action against those involved in the treatment.

Bikrishna Maharjan, the son of Shyam Krishna, of Tarakeshwar Municipality, Kathmandu, who was admitted at hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), on 12 pm Monday, died at around 5:45 am in the morning.

The hospital administration claimed that the child was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and could not be saved despite their serious efforts.

“Unfortunately, we couldn't save the child,” Bipin Jangam, an administrative officer at the hospital, said, adding that the hospital authority might have failed to counsel the relatives of deceased properly.

“We told them that the medicine was working and that there were signs of improvement, but his health condition worsened after 5 am in the morning," he said.

According to Jangam, the child was referred to the hospital for ICU service by the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

The hospital said that the boy was infected with pneumonia and the disease had affected his heart and lungs.

The hospital called the police after the deceased boy's relatives started hurling stones and bricks at the hospital building, smashing some windows.
