KATHMANDU, Aug 25: The State Department of the United States of America has expressed concern over Nepal’s media environment of late.

“Free media are under threat around the world, and this is an issue the United States takes seriously,” Steve Herman, diplomatic correspondent of Voice of America, tweeted quoting the State Department official as saying during a press conference on Wednesday.

“Nepal has a tradition of free and open media, which is part of Nepal’s history of free and open debate and discussion about culture, politics, and history.” The official added that “It is important for the Nepali people and the health of Nepal’s democracy that these traditions are sustained.”

The international concern has come as the Southasia Trust on Wednesday announced that it was compelled to suspend publication of Himal Southasian after November this year due to non-cooperation by regulatory state agencies in Nepal that has made it impossible to continue operations.
