BHAKTAPUR, Aug 27: CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel has said that his party was ready to amend the constitution in the interest of the country and the people.

Speaking in training for party cadres organized by the Youth Association Nepal (YAN) Bhaktapur District Committee here on Saturday, he said since the constitution is a dynamic document it could be amended only on the basis of rationale, practice, experience and necessity.

"The constitution cannot be amended as a means for the ascension of some persons to power and fulfilling some others' interests," he said.

The General Secretary of the main opposition party in parliament said that formation of one or two provinces in the Madhes would not be acceptable to his party, adding that the decision on delineation of the borders of the provinces is not done by some privileged people but by the people or their representatives.

The UML leader stated that Nepal too has adopted the international practice of a naturalized citizen not being allowed to occupy the highest offices of the State. He went on to say that efforts by and the wishes of the Madhesi leaders who have taken naturalized citizenship to hoist the naturalized citizens to high offices of the State would not be successful.
