Nepali Embassy in Belgium marks constitution day

KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The Embassy of Nepal to Belgium organized a special program and the National Day reception in Brussels Tuesday evening to observe the first anniversary of the promulgation of the constitution.

Speaking on the occasion, Charge d’Affaires Ghanshyam Bhandari said that the constitution was a landmark achievement which fundamentally marked the conclusion of eight-year long peace process and materialized Nepali people’s long cherished aspirations to have a constitution written by their own elected representatives.

"The constitution, as an epitome of people’s sacrifice, dreams and aspirations, guarantees equal rights, opportunity and dignity to all Nepali people on the basis of equity, social inclusion, proportional representation, and positive discrimination," he said. 

He underscored the need of effective implementation of the constitution in order to achieve its goals and objectives. He also stated that the Government of Nepal was committed towards this end and to holding the elections as stipulated in the constitution, and carrying out post-earthquake reconstructions and more importantly the socio-economic development of the country. 

Special Guest at the programme, Head of South Asia Division at the Ministry of Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Kingdom of Belgium, Peter Claes, observed that the recent political progress made by Nepal was remarkable and expressed hope that the new constitution would lay a foundation for Nepal’s political stability and economic development. 

Stating that Nepal has been close to the hearts of many Belgians, he underlined the importance of close cooperation between Nepal and Belgium in various sectors including tourism and investment. His government would continue supporting Nepal's development efforts including through multilateral forums, he added. 

Moreover, the programme was attended by a significant number of Belgian government officials, officials of the European Commission, Brussels-based ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, friends of Nepal in Belgium, media persons, the representatives of Nepali organisations and Nepali diaspora living in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, mentioned the press release issued by the Embassy of Nepal in Brussels.
