Charitable football on Saturday

KATHMANDU, Oct 1: With an objective of aiding in the construction of schools in earthquake affected areas across the nation, second edition of the charitable football competition, Nepal Cup Seven A Side Football Tournament, will be played on Saturday and Sunday in the capital.

The event being jointly organized by A division outfit, Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) and Shanghai Vikings will be played at the Army Physical Fitness and Training Center at Lagankhel, Lalitpur.  

According to tournament coordinator Peter Tabor, the tournament will see participation of 13 teams including four amateur teams from Shanghai (China), Denmark, Singapore and Hong Kong besides local teams of Kathmandu. According to MMC coach Chhiring Lopsang, the event will also see participation of MMC junior team and a team belonging to coaches of Nepal.

The event will be played in the league cum knockout format and the participating teams will be divided into three groups. The top six teams after group round will progress to second round and the remaining seven teams will play plate championship. 

Dhuku Futsal is the defending champion.

According to Peter Tabor, they were able to collect $ 72,000 last year and the amount was used to construct the damaged building of Annapurna High School at Jagat, Dolakha. “The construction work of the eight room concrete building is going on,” he said, adding that they were planning to raise at least $ 45,000 this year.
