21 killed in road accidents during Dashain in eastern region

ITAHARI, Oct 18: At least 21 were killed and dozens injured in road accidents in the eastern part of the country in the past fifteen days. 

As many as 22 road accidents were recorded in Morang district alone during the Dashain festival, according to the Eastern Regional Traffic Police Office. 

Barse Madan Gurung, 26, and his brother Kumar Gurung, 35, were killed on the spot as their speeding motorbike met with an accident on October 8. The brothers were found drunk, according to the police.

On October 9, a motorbike (Ba 29 Pa 406) collided with another motorbike in Dainiya-4, Morang killing one person. 

On the same day, a four-year-old boy was killed on the sport while walking on the roadside at Sanischare, Pathari of Morang.

On October 11, at Charhaba of Siraha a motorbike learner hit Ram Prasad Sah, 65, from Siraha Municipality-11. Sah died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
 
The regional police office said 125 people were injured in 73 accidents in various districts including Morang, Sunsari, Siraha, Saptari, Jhapa, Udayapur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Pachthar, Sankhuwashawa and Khotang.

According to the police office, as many as 52 people were seriously injured and 73 people were slightly injured. “Extra vehicles brought on use during Dashain were one of the main reasons for the accidents. Sixty five percent more vehicles were added for Dashain in the region. Majority of them were for Morang and Sunsari districts,” said SSP Pawan Kumar Giri.

Last year, 22 people had lost their lives in accidents the eastern region during the Dashain festival.
