Earthquake-devastated monastery awaiting renovation

KHOTANG, Oct 18: Mintrol Samten Tsoling Monastry of Diktel Municipality-5, damaged by the 2015 earthquake, is waiting renovation and reconstruction.

The concerned bodies are unable to start reconstruction of the monastery due to shortage of funds.  The construction of the monastery had just completed when it was hit by the earthquake in April 2015. The tremor damaged the walls of the western part of the building.

“Lack of financial resources hindered the reconstruction of the monastery,” lamented Furi Sherpa, chairperson of monastery management committee. He further said, “We are counting on our well wishers for the restoration and reconstruction. Otherwise there are no other means for it.”

“The field report prepared by the police was submitted to the District Development Committee and the municipality but no one has responded till date for help,” he added.

 The monastery was constructed by collecting donation in order to perform important rituals such as birth, marriage and death of the Sherpa community as well as to provide the Lama education aimed at 100 households in the locality.

Various organizations and individuals had provided Rs 1.4 million while the Monastery Management Central Community Kathmandu contributed Rs 200,000 and Rs 100,000 was collected on the initiative of Pema Sherpa for the construction of the monastery.

Similarly, Dorje Sherpa donated one ropani and 12 anna of land and Nimduri Sherpa and Kima Sherpa provided one ropani and four anna of land for the monastery.
