KATHMANDU, June 25:United Nations Development Program Goodwill Ambassador Michelle Yeoh said that the disaster risk reduction was vital for achieving the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking in an interaction program on achieving sustainable development goals with lawmakers on Friday, Yeoh said that the 2030 development agenda provides a solid framework to shape Nepal's development policies and programs for the next 15 years and that it was perfectly timed for Nepal to start a brand new phase of development with the new goals.

“The Parliament is a leader of this process, as it plays a critical role in ensuring accountability and making sure that policies and programs are budgeted and effectively implemented,” she added.

She also said that the government commitment was also vital but will not be enough unless citizens, communities, civil society groups also actively participated in the process of achieving the 17 new sustainable development goals.

She said that UNDP will continue to work closely with the Nepal government to help eradicate poverty, increase livelihood opportunities, improve community resilience against conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.

In the discussion, lawmakers said that lack of effective plan and their poor implementation, lack of unity among major political parties have been posing challenge to achieve the sustainable development goals.

National Planning Commission Vice-Chairman Yubaraj Khatiwada said that the role of lawmakers was essential to achieve the sustainable development goals. He said that lawmakers should continuously monitor whether the projects launched to achieve the goals are being effectively implemented.
