KATHMANDU, Nov 24:Most central committee members of the unified Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) have suggested to the party leadership to oppose the idea of allowing naturalized citizens to hold top state posts, through a constitutional amendment.

Speaking at the first central committee meeting of the RPP following the merger between RPP-Nepal and RPP  on Wednesday, party central committee members representing Madhes also opposed the idea, said  party leaders.

RPP leaders Mohan Yadav and Ram Prasad Sah were among Madhesi leaders opposing top posts for naturalized citizens. They have said that the idea of amending the Constitution to allow top posts for naturalized citizens was never a demand of Madhes. “Most of the party central committee members speaking at the meeting have sought the party's position on constitutional amendment issues. They have also reiterated not to amendment the Constitution to allow naturalized citizens into the  top posts” said party leader Kiran Giri.

Most of the 54 leaders speaking at the first-day meeting also suggested to the party leadership to stake out the party's stance for a Hindu state if the party had to vote on the amendment proposal.

Leaders have also stressed  circulating the party unification message down to the party rank and file and the grassroots.

Party Chairman Kamal Thapa, addressing the meeting, proposed holding mass meetings in all seven provinces to exert pressure for reinstating a Hindu state, said party leader Shrestha. 

The general convention of the unified party is proposed for mid-January 2017. The party meeting on Thursday is likely to endorse an action plan for the general convention as well as local, district and provincial conventions.
