KHOTANG, Oct 14: A couple from Khotang, a rural hilly district in eastern region of Nepal, has ventured into promoting locally produced goods by opening a handicraft store in the district.

The souvenir shop, named Rungrima Collection, aims to give a platform for the local producers to sell their products including bamboo items, khadi clothes, woolen clothes, and slippers, among others.

Owners of the store, Bramanka Yugsan Kirant and Pratima Chamling of Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-3, are very passionate about promoting these products. The couple sells clothes, ornaments and fancy stuffs, dalo (bamboo basket), nanglo (bamboo winnower), mandro (bamboo mat), thunse (bigger bamboo basket), phiphi, chalno (bamboo winnower with holes), doko, bamboo cradle, bamboo hanger, and cups that are made entirely from local raw materials.

According to Pratima, all the bamboo products are brought from Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality of Khotang. Cradle and phiphi are brought from Sundhel and Kpilasagadhi rural municipalities. Binayo, murchunga, harimala, dhajuri, pechure, surkethaiili, muga mala and silam sakpa ornaments are kept in the collection.

Chaubandhi choli, chhitko fariya, dhaka topi, bhadgaule topi, and hand-made woolen scarf are also kept in the collection. "We work as a bridge between customers and local producers by showcasing and selling unique items," Pratima said.
