KATHMANDU, June 23: Prem Chalaune, an assistant professor of Sociology at Tribhuvan University, has suspended his hunger strike.

Protesting against the government’s decision to withdraw the case against his assailants, Chalaune had been fasting for the past five days in front of the Vice Chancellor’s Office at Tribhuvan University.

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, issued an interim order telling the government not to drop the case filed against Chalaune’s assailants.

The apex court has asked the government to present the reasons behind withdrawing the case.

Chalaune had gone to the apex court asking it to annul the decision taken by the government. He said that the government’s decision to withdraw the case was not logical and was of a nature to protect criminals, and demanded that the government’s decision be stopped immediately.

Chalaune was beaten and severely injured by a gang of men including Hari Acharya of the Nepali Congress-affiliated Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) on October 6, 2020.
