Sandhya: Revolution and Counter-revolution

Published On: January 5, 2022 06:30 AM NPT By: Hisila Yami

In July 2021, I suddenly heard Sandhya committed suicide in her house in Pokhara. She was only 21 years old.  I was shocked. I was told she underwent an attempted rape by her paying guest landlord who was married and had his own children.

My heart aches when I see more and more Newari speaking parents not teaching their children Newari.

Yami Chhen, the historic house that stood as a symbol of inclusion, was destroyed in 2015 earthquakes. Machama Maharjan, the living memory of that inclusive spirit, passed away last week.

Where is the rage against injustice?

It is time for true nationalists to form a united front to not only implement the constitution but also to augment it with the unfinished agenda of federalism.

Pregnancy brings uncertain times for both the unborn child and the mother, especially at the time of birth. Though rare, there are chances of complications and even fatalities of both mother and child or one or the other or lucky if both can come out of it with the flying colours. This is a fact even during normal times! But with COVID-19 pandemic, peripartum involving the whole package of prenatal, delivery and post-natal has become vulnerable.

How ‘communists’ betrayed Nepal’s Dalits

During the People’s War (1996-2006), I was working as the secretary of People's Power Consolidation Department in the base area. I remember meeting a group of Dalits while I was on my way to Balidan Commune in Rukum. They were marching with panche baja, the traditional set of musical instruments. The group was displaying their instruments of production as if they werecarrying their weapons with confidence and pride. I was surprised, amused and satisfied to see such a sense of empowerment on their faces! That was 2005.

Exploring America

I got this rare opportunity to travel around the United States of America with Dr Baburam Bhattarai. The journey covered areas from the East to West coasts and from north to south states within a month spanning mid-September to mid-October. This visit followed the similar tour we had taken to Europe in July-August. These visits helped us understand where Nepal stands and what development model Nepal actually needs.

What Nepal can learn from Europe

Nepal can learn from strong decentralization that France has adopted. Or decentralization with federal institutions as has been practiced in Switzerland

Women and rightist revival

Curiously, a right-wing wave that is sweeping the world is also producing many right-wing women leaders. Be it Theresa May, the leader of the Conservative Party and current Prime minister of Great Britain, or Marine Le Pen of France who is now contesting the presidential election in France.
