KATHMANDU, July 12: Ramesh Chhetri, 20, of Dailekh lost both his legs in the 2015 earthquake. He has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. While in wheelchair, he learnt to play basketball. Last week, however, he was deeply enjoying the live telecast of the world cup with a basketball on his hand.

BHAKTAPUR, May 26: Some three and a half decades ago,  farmer  Dhruba Prajapati was heading for his fields in Bhaktapur. As usual, he carried his two small kids in a kharpan (shoulder bamboo with baskets dangling from either end). Unbeknownst to Prajapati, somebody captured the image in a camera. A few weeks ago, he was able to see the picture.

BHAKTAPUR, April 28: A little girl of around 10  rides comfortably astride her father’s shoulders as they watch the merry  crowds  in the historic town of Bhaktapur. A jatra is underway and the ambiance is festive. The touching sight of the child-man bond catches the attention of a passing tourist. He feels moved enough to capture it  in his camera . It was 1968 and the photographer was Jim Coleman. Half a century later, the chance photo has caught up with the father and child, and with Coleman also.

While many ran for their lives as soon as the ground started shaking and buildings started crumbling, Yogesh Bashukala, 22, of Bhaktapur was more worried about his pet dog. He tried to descend from a second floor, hugging the dog tightly in his arms.  He got buried in quake rubble in seconds. The youngest son of Gyanendra and Rampiyari Bashukala, his body was later recovered by an army salvage team. He was still clutching Canty, and the dog was still breathing and quite safe.
