The Gorkhaland Movement (or Indian-Nepalis seeking political identity) isn’t a recent phenomenon. It dates back to 1816 when two-thirds of Nepal’s territory was ceded to the British East India Company through Sugaili Treaty. The British granted Indian Nepalis no political rights, although unfettered “military conscription” rights were very well exercised by the British.
