KATHMANDU, April 30: Following the death of a patient at KMC Hospital in Sinamangal, relatives gathered in protest on Tuesday, claiming the hospital's negligence led to the patient's death.

The deceased, Padam Lal Rimal, originally from Ilam Municipality-8 and residing in Battisputali,10, Kathmandu, was rushed to KMC hospital in Sinamangal at 3 PM, experiencing breathing difficulties. He passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Dewendra Rimal, son of the deceased, accused the hospital of negligence in his father's treatment, leading to his death. He stated, “Despite being admitted to the emergency ward and being assured of normal blood pressure, my father received no further medical attention. He ultimately lost his life due to untreated complications.”

Rimal’s relatives allege that the delayed response and lack of timely medical intervention contributed to his death. Since Monday evening, family members have been staging a sit-in protest.

Dewendra Rimal added, “We have CCTV footage showing my father's repeated calls for assistance, his fall from the hospital bed due to the lack of attention for over 48 minutes, and the CPR administered not by medical personnel but by a security guard. Despite our attempts to communicate with hospital management, they blamed us for the death and refused dialogue.”

NMA demands action against those assaulting doctors

Meanwhile, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has objected to the incident of assault on doctors working at the KMC Hospital.

On Tuesday, the NMA issued a statement expressing concern over the incident of violence and vandalism at the KCM Hospital involving attending physicians Prof Dr Binita Pradhan and Dr Puja Shah.

"The NMA strongly condemns the act of vandalizing a healthcare institution and leveling baseless accusations regarding patient care in such a sensitive environment," the statement reads.

The NMA said that if there is any concern about any error regarding the medical treatment, there is a provision to proceed with the legal process, resorting to attacking doctors and healthcare professionals will cause disruption in the delivery of healthcare services.

Furthermore, the NMA has called for action against those responsible for assaulting doctors as per the provisions of Healthcare Workers and Institutions Security Act, 2066 BS.
