KATHMANDU, August 18: With less than one-third of the participants passing the driver's license test, the government authorities concerned have introduced some adjustments in the test procedures in a bid to ensure that at least half of them pass the test examinations.

The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) is trying to increase the pass percentage by making the examination easy through the ‘Driving License Examination Operating Procedure, 2077’.

The decision to relax some of the test procedures comes in the wake of most participants failing the examination as it was a bit stricter than the similar tests conducted in the past.  Dr Loknath Bhusal, Spokesperson of the DoTM, said that changes have been made in both written and practical driving license examinations. “25 questions from 500 questions posted on the website will be extracted,” he said. It is said that the criteria clearly mentions the number of questions and sections from which they will be extracted.

He said that the office will conduct the examination by printing questions on the same basis. According to the new criteria, the number required to pass the examination has been increased for the written examination. However, the number required to pass the practical test has been reduced.

Earlier, the participants had to secure 100 percent marks in the practical examination, but now it is enough if one secures at least 70 marks. In order to make it easier for the examinees, the number required to pass the practical examination has been reduced.

“As the written test comes with limited questions, the pass mark has been increased from 50 to 60 now.” In the practical test, it was found that the participants failed examinations even as they made a simple mistake. But now, this provision has been relaxed,” Bhusal said.

The DoTM said the examination system is being made easier as the driving license examination system in Nepal is more difficult than in India, China, UK, USA and other countries. In other countries, the pass percentage is up to 60/70 percent. But in Nepal, only 25/30 percent of the participants pass the test.

The DoTM is trying to relax the examination system as concerns are being raised from various quarters that the number of accidents has increased due to negligence of drivers in Nepal. Dr Bhusal said that the driver’s behavior causes accidents and this has nothing to do with the examination system. He said that none of the studies conducted so far has shown that the number of accidents increases when the driving license examination system is relaxed.
