KATHMANDU, July 12: The Election Commission (EC) has urged the political parties representing the Legislature-Parliament in collecting voters' roll for coming provincial and parliamentary elections.

The EC has already made public its programme to register voters' name lists in all districts for the provincial and parliamentary assembly election from coming July 16-30.

On the occasion, representatives of the parties said that the timeline of 15 days set for voters registration was scanty as it has to be undertaken in the mid of the rainy season. The representatives also urged the EC to extend the deadline to 30 days.

Recommending the Commission to arrange voters' name lists collection from outside districts as was in the past, the representatives said that the name lists collection should be carried out by reaching out to every local level.

The EC had sent an official letter to the government recommending the tentative dates for holding provincial assembly and House of Representatives. In a letter sent to the government, the EC had recommended October 17 for holding province assembly election and November third week for the parliamentary election.

During the discussion, representatives of some political parties drew the EC's attention towards the dominance of two parties due to an arrangement of threshold for gaining recognition of a national party.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhee Prasad Yadav urged all political parties to mobilize their cadres in the collection of voters' name lists in as a campaign.

Representatives of ruling parties including Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre) and Nepal Loktantrik Forum were absent in the discussion. RSS
