DHARAN, Oct 25: Kisan Rai, who had been working as a journalist for two decades, died after accidentally falling off a cliff in Khotang.

Journalist Rai died after falling down from the Pankhu Khola cliff at Diktel Rupakot Mazhuwagadi Municipality-8 at around 5 PM on Sunday. According to DSP Umesh Lamsal, the incident site is about 9 kilometers away from the district headquarters Diktel.

DSP Lamsal informed that Rai, who was coming to Dharan via Khotang and Bhojpur in a car with his friends, fell from the cliff while going to the toilet. He died after falling 200 meters from the cliff.

“The body of the deceased has been kept at the hospital and further investigation is underway,” said Lamsal. Police said that the postmortem of the body will be done after the relatives arrive.

After receiving information about the incident, a team of police reached the incident site and the body of the deceased was taken to the district headquarters at 2 AM today morning. The deceased journalist Rai had come to Nepal from Hong Kong last week.

While living in Dharan, late Rai served as proprietor of Gyanodaya Boarding School. After moving to Hong Kong, he published and edited, Nepali language newspaper, Everest, for two decades. 

It is the only Nepali-language magazine published from a foreign land for a long time. The late Rai was the President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Hong Kong, the President of the Federation of Nepalese Indigenous Peoples Hong Kong, and the Vice President of NRNA, Hong Kong. He was recently honored by the Hong Kong government as well.
