Govt is committed to ending discrimination against workers: Minister Shrestha

KATHMANDU, May 1: Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Krishna Kumar Shrestha has expressed commitment to make the labor sector systematic and dignified by effectively implementing the fundamental rights of workers as mentioned in the constitution.

Expressing his good wishes on the occasion of the 133th International Labor Day, Minister Shrestha said that the government is committed to creating a secure workplace, fair wages, social security arrangements, working class participation in policymaking, and ending all forms of discriminations and is focused on creating productive employment.

Stating that efforts have been made for legal, policy and procedural reforms for the effective implementation of the fundamental rights of workers, he said that recent work has been started in the field of foreign employment management, promotion of internal employment, improvement in service delivery, organization management and expansion of social security.

Stating that the government, employers and workers need to work hand in hand to build a self-reliant economy through increasing production and productivity, Minister Shrestha said that the government is committed to effective implementation of minimum wage, social security and labor law for the rights of working people in the country.

Minister Shrestha said that the Ministry of Planning has put forward plans to form an empowered National Labor Commission, build hospitals for workers, expand labor offices, include Nepali workers abroad in the social security system, including workers in both formal and informal sectors, and prepare skilled manpower as required by the destination country to send workers for foreign employment. 

He also mentioned that new labor agreements and renewal of labor agreements with the destination countries have been given priority for the rights, dignity and security of those in foreign employment. Minister Shrestha expressed the belief that International Workers 'Day would inspire all towards developing a culture of respect for work, ensuring workers' rights and creating a dignified labor environment.
