KATHMANDU, Oct 3: The government is reportedly preparing to amend the laws to ensure that the transportation of animals is done in a humane and responsible manner.

Sneha Shrestha, the founder of Sneha’s Care, a non-profit animal rescue organization, announced in an interactive session organised by by the National Animal Feed and Livestock Quality Management Laboratory in collaboration with Sneha’s Care that the Livestock Transportation Guidelines, 2064 is being amended to address this issue that the animal rights activists have been demanding since a long time.

The provisions, under Rule 17 of the Animal Transportation Standards, 2056 (Second Edition, 2064), ensure regulation of animal transport practices, addressing concerns over the adverse effects on animal health and welfare.

The initiative, supported by the Government of Nepal, aims to revolutionize the way animals are transported, particularly in regions like the Terai, where instances of distressing transportation practices have been witnessed. Shrestha emphasized the importance of improving conditions for animals during transit, highlighting key aspects such as transportation comfort arrangements, provision of water, and animal care.

Sneha’s Care has long advocated for these changes, and their tireless efforts have culminated in the creation of an interactive program and a documentary shedding light on the current state of animal transport. The organization is poised to collaborate with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of these new standards.

The Director General of the Department of Animal Services expressed optimism that the forthcoming Animal Welfare Act will further bolster animal welfare efforts. The move is seen as a significant stride towards creating a society that prioritizes the well-being of animals.

Sneha Shrestha, founder of Sneha’s Care, extended gratitude for the support garnered in implementing these revised standards, affirming the organization's commitment to building a better society founded on principles of animal welfare and care. The new standards are expected to bring about positive changes in the treatment of animals during transport, setting a precedent for compassionate and responsible animal handling.
