HoR approves BIMSTEC Charter

KATHMANDU, April 2: The House of Representatives (HoR) has approved the Charter of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

In Tuesday's session of the lower house of the Federal Parliament, the proposal seeking endorsement of the BIMSTEC Charter, presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, was approved with majority support.

During the discussions on the provisions of the BIMSTEC Charter in the HoR meeting, DPM and Foreign Affairs Minister Shrestha addressed queries and affirmed the government's commitment to the principles outlined in the Charter.

"We are dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of regional organizations through active participation. Our engagement in forums aligns with the interests of our nation," Minister Shrestha stated.

He clarified, "BIMSTEC is not intended to replace SAARC, nor should it be. Nepal firmly believes in the vitality of SAARC and remains committed to revitalizing it. We will actively contribute to strengthening SAARC while fulfilling our responsibilities as the SAARC Chair."
