International sculpture exhibition in town

Sculpture is one form of art which is different from paintings, as it can be viewed either in two dimensions or three. Artist’s concept to shape a solid object plays an important role to create meaningful sculpture.

An international sculpture exhibition ‘An Insight’ began on May 15 at Nepal Art Council, Babar Mahal, showcasing the insight of national and international sculptors.

In the exhibition, 41 national and 11 international sculptors, from countries like China, German, India, Luthuania, Malaysia, Republic of Korea and Thailand, have depicted their insights through sculptures in mediums such as wood and metal.

The exhibition is featured on the first floor of the gallery. Here, sculptures having the theme of mother earth, environment, family, love, and wilderness welcome you. As you enter the gallery, sculptor Kim Sung Heun’s (Republic of Korea) art work stands out in the exhibition. His work titled ‘Save the Planet’ using mix media showcases pink colored three octopuses clinging to each other on the top of white colored human’s face whose eyes are closed and lower part of face is submerged in deep blue color.

Likewise, Prof Ping Yang from China has created four baby sculptures using green copper—two as army men in grey and two as monks in orange and blue clothes— that are pleasant to look at and gives you a happy feeling.

Nepali sculptor Nar Bahadur BK depicted family life in realistic form in his sculpture using fiber.  He has created human figures of male, female and children who are hugging each other. Likewise, Dhan Bahadur Yakha (Dhanu) has depicted the love of mother and child using bronze but in an abstract form. The exhibition features renowned Nepali sculptors including Gopal Das Shrestha, Thakur Prasad Mainali, Shanker Nath Rimal, Narendra Bahadur Shrestha, Hridaya Ballav Pandey and Laya Mainali.

Department of Sculpture in Nepal Academy of Fine Arts has organized the exhibition that continues till May 22.
