Jessica Gurung seals Pushpalal double, Ratnajit Tamang wins his sixth

ITAHARI, May 13: Jhapa’s Jessica Gurung has won the gold medal winning two titles in the seventh Pushpalal Memorial National Badminton Tournament on Saturday. 

In the final matches played at the Covered Hall of Itahari’s Ward 5, Gurung won women’s singles and U-19 titles. 

Gurung had defeated the national champions and number one woman player Nangsal Devi Tamang to reach the final. She beat the departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club’s Rashila Maharjan 21-13, 21-16 in women’s singles final and 21-14, 21-16 in U-19 final. 

She got Rs 50,000 for her win in women’s singles and Rs 15,000 in her win in the U-19 category. 
The runner-up in women’s singles received Rs 25,000, while the third place player got Rs 10,000. Likewise, in U-19 category, the runner-up was rewarded with Rs 7,000, while the third place player was prized with Rs 4,000. 

In women’s doubles, the Army pair of Tamang and Anu Rai defeated Gurung and Sunaina Mukhiya 21-16, 21-18. 

The winning pair got Rs 20,000 each, while the runner-up was rewarded with Rs 10,000 each. The third-place players got Rs 5,000 each. 

Army’s Ratnajit Tamang won the men’s singles continuing his winning form. Tamang defeated Armed Police Club’s Dipesh Dhami 21-13, 21-12 to life his sixth title. 

He has taken his winning tally to 25 games now. He was rewarded with Rs 50,000, while the runner-up Dhami got Rs 25,000. The third place player was prized with Rs 10,000. 

In men’s doubles, the Army pair Tamang and Nabin Shrestha beat Dhami and Bijit Thapa Magar 21-13, 21-15. 

With the win, Tamang and Shrestha were rewarded with Rs 20,000 each, while the runner-up pair got Rs 10,000 each. The third place pair received Rs 5,000 each. 

In boys’ U-19 category, Army’s Praphul Maharjan defeated his own team’s Rukesh Maharjan 21-16, 21-18 to win the gold and got Rs 15,000 after the win. Rukesh was rewarded with Rs 7,000, while the third-place player got Rs 4,000.
