KMC expands capacity to teach 12,000 additional students in the metropolis

KATHMANDU, April 13: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has expanded its capacity to teach 12,000 additional students in the upcoming academic session.

As per the education department of the metropolis, there are 87 public schools within the metropolitan city with the capacity to enroll approximately 47,694 students from early childhood development to class 10.

Out of the 89 public schools in the metropolis, two are currently being reconstructed, allowing admission in 87 schools, informed the department. Additionally, three schools are situated within the prison premises, and there are four special schools, along with a night school and a Sanskrit school. Enrollment in night and Sanskrit schools begins from class 6 onwards.

During the previous academic session of 2080 BS, approximately 39,952 students were enrolled. Engineer Shailendra Jha, a member of the Urban Planning Commission, mentioned that an additional 12,080 students could be accommodated in early childhood development classes, 5,514 students from classes 1 to 5, and 6,566 students from classes 6 to 9.

Jha said that this capacity was determined based on the information requested from the schools based on indicators such as the physical structure, educational materials, and number of teachers available in the schools.

For the upcoming academic session of 2081, the metropolis is set to launch an admission campaign from April 14 to April 19. Integrated learning will be introduced from early childhood development to class 3, while creative learning activities will be conducted every Friday for classes 4 to 8 under the 'Book-Free Friday' program.

Moreover, vocational programs will be integrated into education for classes 9 and 10, and school activities will be monitored via CCTV cameras. Smart boards will also be installed in classrooms for teaching activities using information technology, according to the department.

Increased investment

According to Jha of the Urban Planning Commission, the KMC has increased investment for educational reforms. About Rs 2.75 billion have been allocated for this year.

This includes Rs 922.9 million for regular programs, Rs 50 million for the KMC Pride Project (Mahanagar Gaurav Yojana) focusing on education, and an additional Rs 50 million for the Swarnim Yojana. Out of this, Rs 1.47 billion will be raised from internal sources, while Rs 1.27 billion will be collected from various associations.
