KATHMANDU, June 22: Lalitpur Metropolitan City has launched a veterinary ambulance service for the treatment of sick and injured street animals in coordination with Sneha Care, an organization focused on the welfare of humans’ best friends.

At a program organized on Wednesday, Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolis Chiri Babu Maharjan handed over the key of the ambulance to animal rights activist and founder of Sneha’s Care, Sneha Shrestha.

On the occasion, Shrestha said that the contribution made by the Lalitpur Metropolis and the concern taken by the mayor himself for the safety and welfare of animals has further motivated them and sert an example for other leaders as well. “We had an old ambulance which had become old and caused regular problems in their rescue related work. We receive over 50 to 60 calls from across the Kathmandu Valley for help. However, the old ambulance met with regular breakdown hindering our rescue or help operation,” she shared. “We use ambulances for serious cases related to an animal getting hit by a vehicle, if the animal cannot walk among other issues. The new ambulance will surely help to continue our work with new motivation,” she added.

Shrestha was of the view that people should not only love and show respect toward dogs and other animals on certain days like Tihar and other festivals but every time they can. Shrestha shared that the contribution of local bodies in running campaigns for animal rights and welfare can further help animal activists to continue their work as well as spread awareness.
