KATHMANDU, June 12: Narottam Baidya, a Bagmati Province Assembly member has self-criticized and withdrawn the controversial statement he made at a meeting of the assembly on Friday.

Addressing a meeting of the province assembly on Saturday, Baidya, who represents the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC), said he had made the statement triggered by high emotions. “As we are fed up with the activities of Prime Minister KP Oli, the words were uttered,” he said, adding, “However, I have now realized that I made an excessive use of the freedom of expression and opinion. Therefore, I’d like to self-criticize and withdraw the statement.”

On the occasion, Baidya also asked the province assembly secretariat to remove the controversial part of his speech from the records of the assembly.

Baidya, in his controversial statement, said that he was ready to be Nathuram Godse to assassinate Prime Minister KP Oli. He made the controversial statement arguing that Prime Minister Oli had indulged in unconstitutional and anti-national activities.  Baidya was alluding to the incident in which Godse had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in India.

The statement has drawn criticism from various quarters. Political leaders across parties have criticized the statement of Baidya that seeks to promote violence in the country.

His party, NC, also directed him to withdraw his controversial statement and also self-criticize over the statement that has courted controversy across political parties in the country.

The ruling CPN-UML, on the other hand, demanded that Baidya be charged with a criminal offence.
