KATHMANDU, June 23: Nepal and the Republic of Cameroon established diplomatic relations on Thursday. With this, the number of countries with which Nepal has established diplomatic relations reached 180.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Amrit Bahadur Rai and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cameroon to the United Nations Michel Tommo Monthe signed a Joint Communiqué to this effect in a brief ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday afternoon.

The two ambassadors also signed a joint letter informing the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres about the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On the occasion, the two envoys exchanged views on various matters of common interest to strengthen bilateral cooperation in national and international forums, particularly at the UN forums for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Cameroon, with more than 240 tribes and 230 languages, is situated in West Africa.  It is bordered by Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Nigeria, and the Atlantic Ocean to the Southwest. It has a total of 475,440 square kilometers of area with more than 27 million population.

Cameroon got independence on 1 January 1960 and joined the United Nations on 20 September 1960.  

Both Nepal and Cameroon are the members of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Group of 77 and China.
