KATHMANDU, April 1: Nepal is set to receive expertise from international fire prevention specialists as it aims to enhance its capabilities in tackling winter fires and wildfires that often lead to significant disasters.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has made arrangements to host two fire experts from Australia. These experts will provide invaluable insights into fire prevention strategies, preparation, and post-fire damage control.

Experts have highlighted the need for Nepal to adopt internationally recognized methods and technologies for fire preparedness and mitigation, citing countries like the USA, Australia, and Canada as examples. The NDRRMA's decision to bring in experts from Australia signifies a step toward bridging this gap in Nepal's fire management practices.

The visiting experts will spend a year in Nepal, focusing on studying, researching, and evaluating the impact of fires and forest fires in the country. They will also facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge and skills to local employees and technicians, free of charge.

Sundar Sharma, a fire expert from the NDRRMA, emphasized the importance of this initiative in improving Nepal's approach to fire and wildfire control, aiming to become a model for South Asia in this regard.

Despite the increasing frequency of fire incidents and wildfires in Nepal, the government's proactive measures in preparedness and control have been lacking, leading to significant human, environmental, and material damages each year. The NDRRMA reported 110 fatalities and material damage worth Rs 2.5 billion due to fires and wildfires over the past year.

The collaboration with Australian experts marks a significant effort by Nepal to address these challenges and strengthen its disaster management capabilities, with a focus on preventing future tragedies and protecting its natural resources.
