KATHMANDU, Feb 7: Nepal and India have jointly inaugurated a blacktopped road from Indian bordering town Laxmipur-Balara to Gadhaiya in Nepal's Sarlahi district built with the Government of India’s financial assistance of Rs 44.48 million.

Nitesh Kumar, Indian Consul General in Birgunj and Binod Kumar Mauwar, division chief of Department of Roads, Road Division in Chandranigahapur, jointly inaugurated the road connectivity recently, according to a press statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.

A grant assistance extended by the Indian government under ‘Nepal-Bharat Development Cooperation’ was utilized for the construction of this blacktopped road, the embassy said. The blacktopped road has two packages viz. Package–I of 4.46 Kms from Indian border -Laxmipur-Balara-Mirzapur and Package–II of 1.62 Kms from Mirzapur to Gadahiya Road/Hulaki Road.

The Project was taken up as a High Impact Community Development Project under an Agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Nepal, the embassy said.  

The MoU for the construction of the said road was signed between the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, and the Division Road Office, Mujeliya, Janakpur under the Department of Roads, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport of Government of Nepal. Now the project is under the jurisdiction of Chandranigahapur Road Division, according to the embassy.

The embassy has expressed hope that the newly-built blacktopped road connecting the Indo-Nepal border will help ease the movement of daily commuters across the border.

"The project is a reflection of India’s development partnership with Nepal and complements the effort of the Government of Nepal in strengthening infrastructure," said the press statement.
