KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Nepal has proposed signing government-to-government (G2G) agreement with Qatar for sending migrant workers to the Gulf state in the coming days.

In a meeting with Qatar's ambassador to Nepal, Yousuf Mohmed Al-Hail, on Tuesday, Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista floated the proposal to the ambassador to ensure social security of the migrant workers.

At the meeting, Labor Minister Bista stressed on the need to increase basic facilities for the Nepali migrant workers in Qatar and to ensure their insurance and social security policies for safer and dignified migration.

As per the agreement reached between the two countries, a group of experts from Nepal will be visiting Qatar to settle technical issues for laying the grounds for sending the workers through G2G scheme.

Ambassador Al-Hail said he was positive about the proposal and assured of ensuring social security to the Nepali migrant workers. The ambassador urged the government to start sending housemaids to Qatar saying they are in high demand.

“We are ready to send workers of your choice but there should not be any sort of cheating while sending them to Qatar. They should not be exploited during their stay there,” said minister Bista, adding, “That's why we all should adopt G2G agreement so that anomalies will be checked.”

Shortly after assuming the office, Minister Bista has been advocating for G2G agreement while sending workers for oversees employment. Bista, who had already stopped sending migrant workers to Malaysia through manpower agencies, is advocating for an end to the process of sending laborers through manpower agencies following massive complaints against them.

After the government stopped sending manpower to Malaysia through manpower agencies, the two countries are now at the final stage of G2G agreement, according to labor ministry officials.
