Nepal to ask the UAE to raise minimum wage for Nepali migrant workers

KATHMANDU, June 13: Nepal and the UAE will be sitting for talks to decide on the renewal of the labor agreement between the two countries. The meeting of Nepal-UAE Labor Joint Working Committee (JWC) is scheduled to be held in Chandragiri, Kathmandu, on Wednesday. The official team of the UAE has already arrived in Nepal for the meeting.

In the meeting, Nepal is going to propose to renew the labor agreement with the UAE by increasing the minimum wage that Nepali workers get in the UAE. According to sources at the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security, Nepal will make concrete proposals on issues such as reforming some legal provisions to make them worker-friendly, social integration of workers who have returned from the UAE, and assistance in the development of workers' skills. The UAE is also preparing to make various proposals to ensure the social security of workers.

The UAE has placed the issue on its agenda, including the need to facilitate entry for domestic workers in the UAE.

A labor agreement was signed between Nepal and the UAE on June 14, 2019.

In the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), it is stipulated that in the case of occupational accident or illness, the employer shall bear the cost of treatment and for a service period of up to five years, gratuity shall be paid at the rate of 21 days for each year of service and for more than that period at the rate of 30 days per year.
