NTC initiates license renewal process for GSM mobile service

KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Nepal Telecom (NT) has started the process for the renewal of its GSM mobile service license, which will expire in mid-May 2024.

Speaking at the 16th Annual General Meeting of Nepal Telecom, the chairman of NT and secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Ram Krishna Subedi said that since the license period of GSM mobile service will expire in 2024, necessary preparation for the renewal of license has been initiated according to the law.

Spokesperson for NTC Shobhan Adhikari said that a formal letter has been sent to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to proceed with the license renewal process.

NT’s license for GSM cellular mobile will reach 25 years on May 11, 2024. Nepal Telecom will have to proceed with the process of renewing the license before the term expires. The Telecommunications Act 2053 BS stipulates a maximum of 25 years for the license of a telecom company.

NTC will get a new license for cellular mobile telecommunication services by paying a license fee of Rs 357.5 million. As per the legal system, the license will be valid  for a  period of 10 years.

Subedi asserted that the NT has prepared necessary infrastructure to test 5G service and said that the work will proceed after receiving approval from the regulatory body NTA for the test.
