KATHMANDU, Dec 28: At the ongoing three-day general convention of the Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association (TUTA), the teachers working on contract basis at the university prevented candidates vying for office bearer positions from filing their candidacies.

Altogether 377 teachers are currently working on a contract basis and have long been demanding permanent status. “We should be made permanent through an internal competition among only contract teachers,” said Govinda Kaini, coordinator of the part-time teachers’ struggle committee.

TU officials and the protesting teachers were holding talks on Thursday evening to resolve the problem.

Earlier, the university had made 900 part-time teachers permanent through an internal competition. In the past 20 years, the TU has conducted four internal competitions among the part-time teachers to make them permanent.

There are around 600 representatives from TU constituent colleges taking part in the TUTA general convention. Around 6,000 teachers will elect the new TUTA leadership.
