KATHMANDU, Nov 30: Twenty seven activists affiliated with Amnesty International Nepal have been released who were arrested by the police earlier today.

Police had arrested the human rights activists who were on their way to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to submit a memorandum to the embassy protesting the raid on Bengaluru-based Amnesty’s office by the Indian authorities last month.

The arrested were kept at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Sorhakhutte for two hours.

Rajan Kuikel, the immediate past president of AI Nepal chapter, told Republica Online that 27 human right activists were arrested near the Indian Embassy.

The Amnesty International has faced criticism in India for violating foreign direct investment guidelines, according to Indian media reports.

The Indian agencies had seized bank accounts of the AI office in Bengaluru barring the organisation from carrying out human rights works, the AI said.
