Police thrashes Province 2 to register first Manmohan win

ITAHARI, Jan 6: The departmental team Nepal Police Club has registered the first victory of the Manmohan Memorial One Day National Cricket Tournament defeating Province 2 by a huge margin of 112 runs in Inaruwa on Saturday. 

At the Inaruwa Sports Ground, Police got the big margin win setting a target of 312 runs, and limiting Province 2 for 199 runs.  

In a 50-over tournament held outside the Kathmandu Valley after the Prime Minister Cup in Nepali cricket history, Nepal Police’s Lalit Rajbanshi and Yogendra Karki picked up two wickets each to register a big win. 

Harishankar Sah and Samsaad Sheikh of Province 2 hit the highest 58 and 29 runs respectively for the team, but its other batsmen could not do well in the chase. Team captain Mahaboob Alam managed to score just 13 runs. 

Earlier, winning the toss and opting to bat first, Police gave a huge target of 312 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Three Police batsmen hit half-centuries in the match. 

Sunil Dhamala hit the highest 79 runs in the match for Police, while Dilip Nath scored 59 runs. Likewise, the other half-centurion was Kushal Bhurtel who hit unbeaten 56 runs. 

Also, Amit Shrestha scored 42 runs, while Yogendra Karki added 26 for the winning team. 

In bowling, Rashid Khan and Harishankar Sah of Province 2 pocketed two wickets each.  Dhamala was named the man of the match for his outstanding batting performance. 

The host Inaruwa will take on Police on Sunday. 

The winner of the tournament will take home Rs 401,000, while the runner-up will be rewarded with Rs 201,000. Likewise, the teams to reach the knockouts will get Rs 25,000 each. 

Seven provincial teams, three departmental teams, the host Inaruwa and Indian team Supaul Cricket Club are taking part in the tournament.
