KATHMANDU, March 8: Nepali Congress (NC) President and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has stressed the need for creating awareness on discrimination and violence against women.

Extending his best wishes to all Nepali women at home and abroad on the occasion of the 113th International Women's Day today, NC President Deuba said Nepal was still not freed from the claws of discrimination and violence against women.

"Women in cities and far-flung villages are still passing through an exploited and oppressed life. Everyone needs to be united to root out all forms of discrimination and violence against women," reads Deuba's message.

Violence was the greatest threat to democracy and people's sovereignty, President Deuba said, adding it was also a huge stumbling block for the country's economic development and a cause for weak social unity and goodwill.

Nepali Congress wishes to end all types of violence in society, he said, expressing the confidence that the Day would inspire all the citizens to remain aware and alert to end all types of violence against women.

Deuba also expressed his high respect to several women who were in the forefront of every movement for the establishment and reinstatement of democracy in Nepal.
