JANAKPUR, August 15: Distribution of relief to the flood victims finally started in Dhanusha district on Monday after the incessant rainfalls for the past three days finally stopped. 

Dhanusha saw sunlight after three days but normalcy is yet to be restored in the district. The rains and floods have already wreaked havoc and caused irreparable damages to many households and families. Thousands have been left without clothes, food and other basic necessities. According to the District Disaster Rescue Committee (DDRC), floods have caused damages to almost all the settlements of the district. Authorities, however, are yet to ascertain the damages. 

Four helicopters were used to transport relief materials provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday. Authorities said relief materials are being stored at Janakpur Airport and are meant for the disaster victims of other districts including Siraha, Mahottari, Sarlahi and Rautahat as well. 

DDRC's member Naresh Prasad Singh, who is also the president of Dhanusha chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society, said 7,892 houses have sustained damages while 11,183 families have been affected by the floods. Among them, he said houses of 3,291 families have been completely destroyed. 

Local Development Officer Santa Bahadur Sunar said they will determine the number of affected houses and recommend to the government to provide relief to the victims at the earliest. 

As of Tuesday, death of three persons in the district has been confirmed.
